What's in a Name!

This post is the aftermath of 'Curd Rice' Kartik wondering why I was praising myself on my own post. Seriously, I don't think I'd do that! That's what you folks are here for, right! So, here's introducing, my name double.. my nick name double.. Kadambari Singhania! Well, she did that posts ago. Here it is. I can never be as consistent as she is but anyway. She posts as Kaddu while I use my full name. Also, our display pictures are different! She's got a Halloween pumpkin (a kaddu).

And talking of names, I decided to Google it up and came across various links to Kadambari. I knew most of them already but some were kind of strange!

  • Goddess Lakshmi is called so. Some say Goddess Saraswathi instead! Well, I guess they are all various avatars of the same one. (And it appears in the Lalitha Saharsranamam).
  • It's the world's first novel written in Sanskrit by Banabhatta.
  • This is an interesting one. Kadambari means the 'nectar/ wine' made from the Kadamba flowers. Intoxicating!
  • It means 'book' in certain languages like Kannada and Marathi.
  • A female cuckoo! FTW. I didn't know this.

My mum has a penchant for traditional sounding, rare and historic names. And my name is the aftermath. So, obviously back in school, I landed up with a number of innovative nick names. Kaddu was the obvious one though I insist, I don't look like one, yet! My case is like, here's Kaddu who looks like Bhindi. Well, and the other really mean one was, Kadhe-mein-bhari. (Translated in Hindi to filled-in-slush). Cadbury was also deduced from the name though it's almost as long.

At BITS, it never turned nasty for me unlike some. I was called AutoCAD or CAD. So much for taking up Mechanical Engineering and actually doing a course called CAD (Computer Aided Design). Funny! What's in a name, anyway!

Rejoice!!!

You have the best of both worlds... or is it of every world... wealth + intelligence/knowledge!

That makes it the best of all possible worlds, rather :-)

And... retro is 'in'...

Sourish. I know! :D

Thanks for dropping by, Ramya. I was reading your post on Mallu names earlier this morning, before posting mine. :)

I think I'll stick to calling both of you 'Kaddu', coz AutoCAD is a good name, but sounds too geeky. :D

Kadambari is a beautiful name.I cant imagine how anyone could abstract "CAD" as a nickname from such a poetic name.Brutal murder indeed. I have nothing against the software though, it is a true life saver!

ohhhhhh its a interasting post...kadambari

Kadambari said...

Lol! Kaddu is perfectly fine, Sumit!

And Aparna, Thanks! There are some people who still call me by my full name! :)

True, Gymnast! We can't do without them.

I think Kaddu is a wonderful nick. I still haven't decided what my stand is on Kadambari though. I think I'm leaning towards retro tamil poetry chic? Still thinking.

Speaking of which, I've never ever been able to give people a nick-name that stuck. Have you ever managed to do that?

P.S. Umm .. where did I wonder that?

Raghav said...

Kadambam... i think is not A flower but a mixture of flowers... So thats nectar of a mixture of flowers or many flowers. Indian languages are rich and beautiful and so is any name.

Read the two blogs on your home page... '#Fail' was very sensible...

seems like a kadambari to me :)

i too have a penchant for traditional sounding names and was suggesting "neelambari" and "kadambari" to my wife :) but she doesnt seem to agree coz she already knows a kid named "neelambari" and hates that kid :((

Kruthika said...

a) u forgot "dambari"!!! :D

b) goddess saraswati n goddess lakshmi are not avatars of the same goddess female...the former is brahma's wife and takes care of knowledge, while the latter is vishnu's wife and she takes care of wealth!!!

c)am gud ya! hows u??? :)))

Lol! Looks like Kaddu is a universally accepted nick! Thanks Raghav and Satish.

Kartik. Nope. I have never been able to either!

Sandeep. In that case, you'll have to settle for modern day, short names! :)

Kika.. Ok ok. Confusion! Edho, some Goddess.

Mahesh, Adesh, P, Baadshah, Vishal. So much for a doctorate! I better publish a paper now. :)

kadambari mean novel in marathi.. i love this name! :) and i liked your posts/blog too.. keep writing!

Vyazz said...

I thought Kadambari meant a novel...but yeah...I did come across ur name in the Lalita Sahasranamam.
Its better than the common names like the ton of poojas, rahuls and rohits one comes across.
Newayz....as far as names go I really don't get the names of Indian celeb's kids.....they are soo way off and unheard off!!!

Kokonad said...

Heh heh, great post, Kadambari! When it comes to names, mine is a minefield. I wonder how I got through primary school. At one point I remember having told my parents why did they give me a name other kids would make fun of me for!
Now I love it for its uniqueness! :D
I had once written a post on my blog - Whatsisname about how a friend of mine decided to drop her last name, and then she was left with only a first name, but US requires you to have a last name, so she made her first name her last name, and now official first name on records is "Unknown". She has been called that. Aloud. In public.

Saya said...

You must have also got the nickname "Cadbury" :D
Nice blog.

rads said...

I did get curious when I saw another kaddu here and checked out her blog..like you said she's already written about this...and as far as names are concerned mine is a quite common name and what's irritating is I find 2 to 3 Radhikas everywhere I go, in fact in Chicago there are several who have my surname too. You should be glad you have a unique name.

Mukund said...

Hey as I told you i mentioned your name and the previous post on my blog (you can go ahead and check it out). I have kept your first name in it though after reading this post I am really tempted to change that... :)

Innovative I say! I had one other Hemal Shah commenting on my blog... but those days my blog was't that popular and people hardly used to visit... I think Cadbury gells well and CAD is nice too...

Interesting post! Names are always fascinating, especially names that have some kind of meaning behind them. :) You should try googling your name on googlism.com. It's always entertaining to see what sentences come up with your name in it.

PS - Had to delete my last comment cause it had a rather silly typo on there.

Kaddu is kinda unfair to your wonderful full name . But still , you must be the only Indian who has done total analysis of your name and managed to meet a namesake too

Bhagyashree, Saya, Dphat, Rads, Mukund, Hemal, Archana, Shathi. Thanks! I generally came up with the analysis to see if there were any interesting 'twists'! :)

Vyas. Celeb kids names are mostly a joke! Kuch bhi bolte hain. It's more like word games!

Lol. Kokonad. That must have been terrible! :D Shall look up the link.

Oye Bhindi! I had already come across online versions of the book! No credits! :P

I've got experiences of a different kind. In my friend circle, I've rarely been known by my first name. It has always been a short-form of my surname. I used to get calls at home, which my dad used to pick and friends would directly address him with my nickname!! Embarrassing for both, me as well as my dad.

Kaddu said...

:-D Awesome research yaar! Brilliant!
I knew abt the bits on Saraswati ji, Banabhatta & 'novel' in Kannada... but the wine & cuckoo are completely new! Wow! You mean to say that we have an 'intoxicating' effect on people? Ummm! I kinda like that idea, don't u? Nasha hi nasha hai.... ;-) :-p

Speaking abt our nick names, I'm supposed to dig out an article I wrote (on paper, yeah!) back in class 12th I think... on my various nicknames... and post it on my blog for someone! And hey, I've been called 'Cadbury' too... although I never cud figure out the sense it 'coz, as u said, it's almost equally long as 'Kadambari'! :-D

Pushkar said...

In Marathi Kadambari means a novel. My mothertongue is marathi & so its easy for me so I will stick with this name. Cadbury isnt bad either. Agree it's eqaually long but its good for casual chat & friendly banter. CAD - Innovative. kadhe mein bhari is a bit of atyachar.

Roshmi (Musings of an Unknown Indian) said...

'Cadbury' is a 'Kool' name but 'Cad' and 'Bury' aren't!!! :-)

There are folks with surnames like 'Mota', 'Butt'... Imagine their plight... going through life with names like that... (???) Being the 'butt' of jokes... really!!!

Dream'R said...
